Title: Environmental scanning: A person-situation interactional perspective

Abstract: Environmental scanning studies have traditionally focused on characteristics of information sources and systems. These studies have overlooked the situational and behavioral aspects of scanning. This study uses an interactional model to examine scanning behavior. The model combines an individual variable (open-mindedness) with a situational variable (culture values) to investigate the scanning practices within a Fortune 500 firm. Initial analyses did not produce significant relationships; further analyses generated useful and statistically significant patterns. The implications of the findings for the research and practice of environmental scanning are presented.
