Title: Information Requirements Deinition Techniques: A Comparison and A Synthesis

Abstract: Requirements definition is the phase of the system development life cycle (SDLC) that defines the needs of the user without regard to how those needs are satisfied. Errors made during this phase often are compounded from misinterpretation in the design and implementation phases. Since it is increasingly expensive to correct these errors in later stages it is extremely important to prevent or correct them as early as possible. Thus, Information Requirements Definition (IRD) is a critical step in the SDLC. Improperly conducted, IRD will likely increase the probability of project failure and decrease the effectiveness of the existing software design and development methodologies. The IRD process, however, belongs to an ill-structured subject area. A major step toward understanding the deep structure of this process certainly would be an important contribution to systems engineering. This is the main thrust of the present research, which addresses two broad questions: (1) Are IRD techniques comparable? (2) If so, what are their common characteristics and differences?

The first question will be dealt with by designing an attribute framework which will describe the relevant features of IRD techniques' methodological steps, i.e., IRD activities. After decomposing the IRD techniques into their elementary IRD activities cluster analysis will be performed. The resulting clusters will be the key to answering the second broad research question.

The analysis of the commonaltie and differences between the studied techniques will be offered as an aid to decision maker in selecting the best match or fit between IRD techniques and contingency factors. Therefore, enhancing the probability of the IRD process implementation success.
