Title: MILDRED L. BATCHELDER: A STUDY IN LEADERSHIP

Abstract: The written history of librarianship indicates an early interest in library services to children and youth, but few of the leaders in that field have been investigated through systematic research.

This biographical study investigates the life and work of Mildred L. Batchelder, with emphasis on her philosophy, her leadership style, and her impact on the library profession. Batchelder was the first school library specialist on the staff of the American Library Association and the first executive secretary of its divisions for children and young people. During her thirty years with ALA (1936-1966), she was also actively involved in the Association's early promotion of audiovisual materials, intellectual freedom, and international relations.

Based on voluminous existing records, interviews with Batchelder's contemporaries, and with Batchelder herself, this study examines chronologically her activities, her attitudes, and her influence. An attempt has been made to determine how this early leader viewed the library profession, her role in it, and the issues of her day.

Batchelder's strength of character, her unique style, and her national position emerge as factors which enabled her to play a significant role in the direction and improvement of library services to children and young people.
