Title: HOME MISSIONARIES ON THE MICHIGAN FRONTIER. A CALENDAR OF THE MICHIGAN LETTERS OF THE AMERICAN HOME MISSIONARY SOCIETY, 1825- 1846. (VOLUMES I-III)

Abstract: This study consists of a calendar of the reports written
by the Michigan missionaries of the American Home Missicnary
Society to the SocietyVs offices in New York from the period
of 1825 to 1846. In addition to the calendar of 530 pages,
the study includes an historical introduction of 126 pages,
a section containing 180 biographical sketches of the Michigan
missionaries, and a comprehensive index to the calendar.
The historical introduction discusses briefly the settlement
of Michigan, the development of a missionary spirit in the
nation, and the founding in 1826 of the American Home Missionary
Society. That society was supported chiefly by the Congregational
and Presbyterian denominations, and the cooperation of these two
denominations in establishing churches on the fronti.er under the
Plan of Union of 1801 is explored. Events leading to growing
strife between the two denominations, to the Schism of 1837 in
the Presbyterian Church, and to the abrogation of the Plan of
Union are outlined.
The introduction continues with a discussion of the
missionaries of the American Home Missionary Society, who came
to Michigan in this period. The topics that are dealt with
are the geographical origin of the missionaries, their education,
their reaSons for coming west, their methods of finding
a location, their support from the people, their living and
working conditions, and their pastoral dvties. The effect of
the Panic of 1837 is discussed. The way in which the American
Home Missionary Society operated in Michigan is detailed.
The section of biographical sketchec contains biographies
of varying length for all of the missionaries and agents who
wrote the letters which comprise the calendar. In addition
to the sketches of their lives, many references are given to
further biographical information for the missionaries. Much
of the material in the sketches is drawn from information in
the calendar itself.
The calendar consists of abstracts of 2325 letters. This
section is single-spaced. The abstracts vary from a few sentences
in length to half a page. The average is from ten to
fifteen lines. The index to the calendar is a comprehensive
name and subject index which provides full access to the contents
of the calendar.
