Title: THE INFLUENCE OF CERTAIN VARIABLES ON COLLECTION USE AT THREE HISTORICALLY BLACK LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGES

Abstract: Collection use at three historically Black liberal arts college libraries was analyzed. Subject field, copyright date and inclusion in Books for College Libraries, Public Library Catalog 1973 and Public Library Catalog 1978 were the characteristics considered. Relative use (book use in relation to holdings) was determined from shelflist samples and circulation records. The results were compared to previously reported findings to ascertain whether use of these collections was similar to use in other academic libraries.

The findings of this study were comparable to those reported for other collections. Relative use was in general low at each school, and varied among the broad subject fields. In most subjects, utilization factors diminished as copyright dates became older. Titles listed in selection tools were in general used less than titles not listed--a finding that raised serious questions about the effectiveness of standard selection tools as guides for small Black college libraries.
