Title: THE FACULTY IMAGE OF THE ACADEMIC LIBRARIANS IN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES OF PENNSYLVANIA: A MEASURE OF ATTITUDE
Abstract: The major purpose of this study was to ascertain the image of academic librarians among faculty members. Two hypothesis were tested: (1) There is significant difference in the image held of academic librarians among faculty members in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences and technology, respectively, in colleges and universities of Pennsylvania; (2) There is significant difference in the image held of academic librarians among faculty members in colleges and universities of Pennsylvania concerned primarily with teaching and those in colleges and universities concerned with teaching as well as research.
A total of 351 faculty members from thirty institutions were randomly chosen for the study. In the two-part data collection instrument--a mail questionnaire and an interview schedule--the sample subjects participated in two separate groups. The scoring system for the scale items in the mail questionnaire was based on a Likert type five-point scale designed as "Strongly Agree," "Agree," "Undecided," "Disagree" and "Strongly Disagree". To facilitate interpreting and analyzing several statistical tests were performed on the data generated by the instrument. The tests were analysis of variance, t-test, factor analysis and chi-square. The level of significance was set at .05.
Major findings of the study are: (1) Faculty members hold a favorable image of the academic librarians; (2) there is no significant difference in the image faculty members have of the academic librarians on the basis of academic disciplines and the type of institutions in which they are employed; (3) faculty members who formed a positive first image of the librarian hold a favorable image of the academic librarian and vice versa; (4) faculty members who served on library committee(s) hold a significantly more positive image of the academic librarians than those who did not serve; (5) faculty members who are in favor of faculty status for librarians hold a favorable image of the academic librarians and vice versa; (6) faculty image of the academic librarians is accounted for by three factors; namely, usefulness of the librarians, human qualities of the librarians, and professionalism of the librarians.
