Title: AUTHORITY CONTROL FOR EAST ASIAN NAME HEADINGS IN LIBRARIES WITH EAST ASIAN COLLECTIONS: A SURVEY OF PRACTICES AND EXPECTATIONS
Abstract: The present study examines the relationships between the libraries with East Asian collections in their name authority control practices and procedures, the librarians' perceptions of online authority control systems, and the library's catalog integration procedures for conflicting headings, particularly in relation to a shared online cataloging system for East Asian vernacular-script meterials, along with the impact of an online cataloging system on the record-keeping operations of these libraries. Several demographic and other variables of librarians and libraries with East Asian collections were identified and obtained to measure the relationships with these selected variables.
The survey instruments used for data gathering in this study are questionnaires and interviews. A questionnaire was sent out to the directors of the 100 libraries identified as libraries with East Asian collections in the U.S. and Canada, and 22 librarians from nine libraries were interviewed. A total of 72 libraries gave usable responses which were analyzed.
The results of the statistical tests indicate that even though no statistically significant relationships (p < .05) exist between the selected variables, the main effects of the types of authority control practices and procedures are significant at the p < .05 level, which points to the conclusion that name authority control practices, procedures, and the librarians' perceptions of components of online authority control systems in the libraries with East Asian collections are the traditional and the pre-cataloging name authority control.
The results of the interviews indicate that all the libraries participating or proposing to participate in the CJK (Chinese, Japanese and Korean) online cataloging system have accepted LC MARC copy without major local modifications, and that the majority of the librarians opt for the necessity of the authority control of East Asian names, on account of the prevalence of homophones, and also for the idea of having vernacular script with dates in addition to the Romanized forms of names in online authority records.
