Title: A literature filter of variable permeability
Abstract: The purpose of this inquiry is to develop an algorith for the processes of iterative selection which are a prime function of libraries. These processes are the initial selection of documents, the selection of classes from the initial selection, the ordering of these classes, and the selection of units from them for presentation to specific users. These processes may be viewed as a filtering of the literature of a subject.
A major hypthesis of the study is tha this filtering process can be carried out by a librarian who is not versed in the subject of concern by following a defined set of rules. These rules are based on previously developed mathematical techniques for the analysis of subject literatures.
The specific literature analyzed is a medical literature, that of cardiac arrhythmia. The defined user group was composed of medical students at Case Western Reserve University. The result is an ordered classification scheme for the selected documents, which makes use of the developing knowledge of the user group.
The automatic indexing techniques utilized result in a working definition of a mnimal vocabulary for the description of a subject literature.
