Title: An information retrieval system for a computer center
Abstract: A search strategy for information retrieval, Goffman's Indirect Method, Is implemented and tested on the body of literature that describes the use of a computer center's software. The system is tested on titles, abstracts and full text documents. Results wIth these test types are discussed and examples are included.
Features of the retrieval system are:
The user can easily modify the size of the answer set. The system is self-organizing and completely automatic. The query is a document In the set knowh by the user to be "relevant". Searching is economical because no text is searched at retrieval time.
Several refinements of the method are suggested to Improve system, performance.
Drawbacks of other information retrieval systems and the way in which this system overcomes them are pointed out.
The use of the system is described with instructions for running the programs, program flowcharts and sample input and output.
