Title: The characteristics of users' queries and users' relevance criteria in a image retrieval in American history

Abstract: This study examined characteristics of users' queries in conjunction with their information need and identified any change of relevance criteria employed through the information seeking process in American history. In addition, it attempted to determine the degree to which textual representations of the image were useful in user's relevance assessments. Data were collected from unstructured interviews and questionnaires. Content analysis and quantitative statistical methods were employed to analyze verbal data and the importance of relevance criteria to see how much each criterion affected the user's judgments. The study involved 38 faculty and graduate students of American history in 1999 in a local setting, using the Library of Congress American Memory photo archives.

The study found a similarity in image query formulation across various types of users and that a general characterization of queries could be formulated. The relative importance of the relevance criteria was changed very much as the users moved across the information-seeking process. The users decided on retrieved items according to a variety of criteria beyond topicality. However, the user's perception of topicality was still the most important factor across the information seeking stages. Image quality and clarity was important. Users searched for relevant images on the basis of title, date, subject descriptors, and notes provided.

This study confirms prior research on user query in image search and is the first to explore relevance judgments in an image retrieval environment. The conclusions of this study will be useful in image database design to assist users in conducting image searches. This study can be helpful to future relevance studies in information system design and evaluation.
