Title: University library effectiveness: A case study of the perceived outcomes of structural change
Abstract: This study examines whether there is a perceived relationship between the organizational structure of professional activities in a large, complex university library and library effectiveness. In university libraries, the organizational structure of professional activities has evolved without sufficient analysis as to whether the structure continues to be efficient or effective. A study of an exemplar model is conducted for the purpose of exploring whether librarians perceive that a reorganization of their professional activities had an effect on library effectiveness. Specifically, three dimensions of organizational structure are investigated--job specialization, unit grouping, i.e., the focus of the library department, and participative decision making--in relationship to three dimensions of library effectiveness--overall performance, adaptability in library policies and services, and the library's use of professional expertise.
