Title: Clinical drug literature: A Bibliometric Analysis
Abstract: Much work has been completed on the application of quantitative measures to literatures dealing with the subject areas devoted to ideas or concepts. Little or no work has been reported on the use of these techniques in an applied situation, on a literature devoted to a scientific product. This study attempts to apply the quantitative measures to such a literature and examined the implications of the results in terms of professional action on the part of the librarian or information scientist.
The subject examined in this dissertation is also of long standing concern. Legislators, medical practitioners, and pharmaceutical manufacturers have long been concerned with influences which bear on prescribing practices. Many of the influences have been studies but the impact of professional journal literature on prescribing habits has never been examined closely. One reason for this lack of depth has been the absence of a reliable, objective methodology which could be applied. It suggested that the bibliometric techniques provide the methodology for an understanding of the professional journal literature that has been previously lacking.
