Title: On the design of an information retrieval system
Abstract: This dissertation deals with the design of information retrieval systems for the journal literature of Science and Technology.
The various elements of such IRS are discussed and suggestions are made towards the design of a system more effective than the conventional operating systems (of the Boolean type).
A time dependent model for quality assessment of the journal literature is suggested in order to filter out non-relevant material.
The retrieval strategy, a modified version of Goffman's indirect method, conveys the answer in the form of a "map" of ordered linked documents, in which the user finds his own optimal path.
A time dependent model for combining several relevance indicators to be used as a measure of documents' relatedness is proposed. The experiment performed indicates that such a combination might increase effectiveness, i.e. augment relevance and decrease "noise."
The applicability of the suggested IRS is discussed and its economic feasibility is demonstrated.
