How do we cover feeders on CBC?

Ben Ringer and I are going to be covering the Fletcher, NC area for the
Henderson County CBC. I was wondering what counters do with the many places
in an area where people feed birds in backyards etc.

Do any of the CBC's take advantage of radio or newsppaer media? Do you mail
or distribute simple checklists to people with feeders? Do you ask them for
permission to visit their feeders to count whatever birds show up in the
time that you can spare?

If finches and sparrows are opportunistic and go from feeder to feeder, do
we get a realistic number for the common feeder species of birds? How do we
avoid inflating counts by inadvertently recounting the same birds especially
at feeders that are very busy?

Another question. In CA birders will often use the new FM 2-way radios when
looking for birds. Are such radios used on CBC's?

I appreciate any feedback anyone might have.
