Western Grebe

In response to Wade Fuller's earlier reference about the Western Grebe at
Avon Pier, I'm happy to report that after a leisurely morning recovering
from a rather rough (but hugely successful) Brian Patteson pelagic, Leto and
I stopped by the pier to look for the Harlequin Duck and did in fact find
the Western Grebe. In addition, we discovered a Red-Necked Grebe which we
first saw about 100 yards south of the pier and then watched work its way
several hundred yards north of the pier until out of sight. Quite the hot
spot this morning as the Harlequin Duck was also still present.

Gulls at the point on Saturday included an adult Iceland Gull, at least
three and possibly four adult Thayers Gulls, a second winter Glaucous Gull
(which apparently has become the point pet), the usual assortment of Lesser
Black-backed Gulls, a Little Gull (seen by Susan Campbell), and at least
three funky gull specimens that are apparently hybrids. Another notable
observation from the point on Saturday was a wedding, complete with
beautiful white gown...in gale force wind and blowing sand.

I assume that Brian Patteson will report on Sunday's outstanding pelagic. So
I won't steal his thunder.

All in all, this weekend was a fabulous one for birding at the outer banks.

Happy Birding,
