About Potto Project
Potto Project is an open content project that is intended for use by the community to write quality text books for colleges. Using the open content model (check it out at www.opencontent.org), we believe that a website such as this is important to the open content movement. In fact, this project started because of the idea of open content. On one side, big organizations, (such as the media in Hollywood), create laws that supported by courts Judges about something that is unthinkable: copyright [essentially] forever.
While the Founding Fathers of this country thought that the copyright should only be for a limited time, the courts and some legislators now think otherwise and indeed the passed the ``right'' laws. This project is one reaction to this kind of thinking. While the driving force behind the ``copyright forever'' is economical (why we give copyright in the first place), it is immoral. If we can remove that force, the ``copyright forever'' push will also dwindle down and perhaps will be eliminated.
While we cannot provide every possible alternative to all the material that is provided by ``copyright forever'' ``forces,'' we can do something. We have started with a simple contribution of textbooks for college students. Hopefully, by mainly educating the ``main brains'' of our society that ``copyright forever'' is bad for several reasons that will lead to legislation that remove ``copyright forever.'' We cannot trust the judges in the federal nor state systems. The Federal Eight Circuit Court of appeal and courts under it are excellent example of how rules and facts are invented. How can one expect that these kind of courts will help the society? With this kind of legal system the only way to force out ``copyright forever'' is by publishing the information about it and by removing the economical incentive. And perhaps in the process we will also begin having decent and appropriate judges.
The initiator of this project, Dr.~Bar-Meir, is hopeful that others will joint his efforts to create many diverse textbooks for students and professors in college. While some might not agree with the reasoning behind the initiation of this web site, I hope you (the reader) will consider doing so.
