Banner gone
The Cackalacky banner on the side of Cliff’s Meat Market at 100 W. Main Street in Carrboro was stolen last week.
The Cackalacky Classic Condiment Company is offering a free case of Cackalacky – a $60 value – to the person who returns the banner to Cliff’s, no questions asked. The banner cost the Chapel Hill-based company $300.
Cackalacky is a spicy condiment that was created in Chapel Hill.
Pet masks donated
A donation from Doggie Spa and Day Care to Orange County fire departments could save the lives of county pets caught in fires.
Kirk Korley, owner of the pet care center, donated 15 sets of veterinary surgical masks with the assistance of Melanie Smith of the Four Paws Animal Clinic. The masks, which can be connected to standard oxygen cylinders carried by emergency vehicles, will be used for animal resuscitation at fire scenes.
Each set contains a large-canine, small-canine and feline mask, and sells for around $99.
“There has been a lot of press in the last few months about emergency care for house pets,†Korley said. “Many fire departments are not equipped with animal rescue masks and this was a way to give back to the community.â€
Orange County Emergency Management distributed the masks to the Carrboro and Chapel Hill fire departments, as well as to each of the county’s volunteer fire departments.
Price, local leaders meet on Harris
On Friday, April 28, delegates from six local government bodies met with Rep. David Price to discuss concerns about fire safety and related issues at the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant. Of particular focus was the concern that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has not been fulfilling its responsibility for regulatory enforcement.
Local officials in attendance were Mark Kleinschmidt (Chapel Hill Town Council), Randy Voller (mayor of Pittsboro), Mike Nelson (Orange County Commission), Tom Vanderbeck (Chatham County Commission), Mike Gering (Hillsborough Board of Commissioners) and Dan Coleman (Carrboro Board of Aldermen), with Jim Warren (NC WARN) attending as a resource.
In addition to the fire safety issue, spent fuel storage, adequacy of evacuation planning and threats to nuclear facilities were discussed. Participants report that after a frank and robust discussion, Rep. Price agreed to encourage a Government Accountability Office study of fire safety enforcement by the NRC.
