CHHS students bike for cancer research
Seven high school students from Chapel Hill will bicycle 3,700 miles across the country this summer to raise funds for cancer research at UNC.

The students will ride with the Washington or Bust Cycle Tour, which starts in Maryland on June 10 and ends 10 weeks later in Washington.

Student riders include Kit Brown, Adams Conrad, David Hare, Heath Hudgins, Matt Mouton, Daniel Pearce and Angelo Sharp, with leaders Brian Burnham and Brad Wilson. They hope to raise $10,000 for cancer research at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

UNC Health Care eliminates bonuses for Roper and other key executives
The UNC Health Care System board of directors on Monday voted to eliminate performance-based bonuses for the system’s key executives and reduce bonus levels for other executives.

The board acted on the recommendation of UNC Health Care CEO William Roper, whose own bonus was eliminated.

Other executives who will no longer receive performance-based bonuses include: Margaret Dardess, senior counselor for the dean’s office of the UNC School of Medicine; Kevin FitzGerald, executive associate dean for finance and administration of the UNC School of Medicine; Brian Goldstein, chief of staff for UNC Hospitals; Gary Park, president of UNC Hospitals; Etta Pisano, vice dean for academic affairs of the UNC School of Medicine; Marschall Runge, vice dean for clinical affairs of the UNC School of Medicine; and Al Stewart, chief financial officer of UNC Health Care.

The board also reduced the maximum bonus potential for additional senior executives from 30 percent to 10 percent.

OWASA seeks customer comments
The OWASA board of directors will hold a public hearing tonight to respond to customer questions and comments regarding the proposed water and sewer rate increases as well as the proposed budget and 15-year capital improvement plan.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the Chapel Hill Town Hall.

Carrboro biofuel gets swipe-card service
Piedmont Biofuels is now offering swipe-card service to all co-op members at its Carrboro B100 tank located at the Carrboro Public Works lot on Smith Level Road next to the 15-501 Bypass. The lot is open during Public Works business hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Swipe-card service is also available at Piedmont Biofuels Raleigh tank at Larry’s Beans, 1507 Gavin Street. Biofuel is available there 24 hours a day. The service will also be available at TS Designs in Burlington when that location opens sometime this summer.

In announcing the new service in Carrboro and apologizing for some downtime while the system was put in, co-op executive director Matt Rudolf writes: “We know it can be a shocking experience to smell the gasoline vapors while conducting transactions at the junk food-lined counters after years of filling on your friendly biodiesel co-op’s fuel. Thank you for bearing with us, and now we can all finally enjoy the Carrboro pump unlocked to its full, unlimited user capacity.”

NSF awards grant to Planetarium
The National Science Foundation has awarded a $570,487 grant to Morehead Planetarium and Science Center at UNC. The grant will support the center’s Science 360 educational program.

Science 360 shows are designed for school-age children and their families. The newest Science 360 shows on June 10.
