With volunteers contributing more than 14,000 hours in 2006, it’s no surprise that the PTA Thrift Shops’ annual volunteer appreciation day last week drew a crowd.
More than 70 people turned out for the event, which was held at the Chapel Hill Museum.

The organization’s two thrift shops and donation center benefit the Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools through the schools’ Parent Teacher Associations. Volunteers earn money for their schools according to the number of hours served. PTA Thrift Shops relies heavily on its volunteers, including students, parents and other community members.

Volunteer coordinator Emily Gordon presented volunteers with a variety of door prizes donated by about 30 local businesses. In addition, PTA and school representatives, including Glenwood Elementary School principal Amy Rickard and McDougle Middle School principal Debra Scott, showed up to support the organization’s volunteers.

Dorothy Horton, who has volunteered 806 hours, was recognized for her exceptional service. In addition, the PTA Thrift Shops honored Amy Abernethy, who has volunteered 418 hours, and Donald Cooper, who has volunteered 100 hours.

The PTA Thrift Shops also recognized individuals who have volunteered 20 hours or more. These include:
