Students honored for achievement on national exams
Smith Middle School students have received honors for their performance on the National French and Spanish Exams.
On the French I exam, Violette Zhu earned first place. Other students who performed well include Emer O’Reilly, Abby Muller, Herman Bhupal and Stefan Garval.
Students who placed in the top ten on the French II exam include Joanna Barros-Magalhaes, Aidan Kelley, Michael Reichers, Paul Noah, Angela Zhang, Isaac Akers, Andrea Aldana and Morgan Grobin.
On the Spanish Level I exam for students with outside experience, Karishma Desai, Jacob Stern and Sophie Gan finished in the top ten.
In the bilingual category, Mayte Rodas finished eighth and Ruth Pineda ninth. On the Level II Exam in the bilingual category, Raul Galvan finished second. In the outside experience category, Elysia Su, Zoe Gan and Abigail Lin finished in the top ten.

Iron chef crowned
East Chapel Hill High School student Evan Doughty has been named the new Iron Chef Champion by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools nutrition department.
Doughty’s entrée and salad were voted the best by a panel of judges at the third-annual Iron Chef competition in the East Chapel Hill High cafeteria on May 9. The competition is sponsored by the school nutrition department and Sodexho and was designed to promote healthy cooking and good nutrition.
Students Ben Isaacs and Tucker Witsil tied for second place.
ECHHS Odyssey team in top ten
The East Chapel Hill High School Odyssey of the Mind team finished tenth at the International Odyssey of the Mind Competition last weekend.
The competition of 45 teams was held at Michigan State University, May 23-27. Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that emphasizes creative problem-solving for students.
Team members include Micaela Arneston, Andrew Dep, Maggie Funkhouser, Millie Rosen, Ted Shepherd and Ziahaw Thor. They are coached by Sandy Daston.
Healthy gatherings
SmartStart Family Fest and the Orange Mile to promote the Healthy Kids Campaign will be held on Saturday at Southern Village.
Family Fest is a free event to provide information on SmartStart’s local program services and features entertainment, face painting, music, games and crafts.
The Orange Mile, a one-mile family walk, will begin at 9 a.m. at Southern Village. Family Fest will begin immediately following the walk and will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
