The Orange County Inspections Division on Friday condemned the Buckhorn Flea Market building because of serious building, electrical and fire code violations.
In April 2006, the Inspections Division and the Orange County fire marshal conducted inspections at the building and found dangerous conditions, including overloaded and improperly installed electrical systems, extremely flammable finishes on walls and ceilings, improper use of propane and kerosene heaters, inadequate exits, no fire protection systems or fire alarm systems, no emergency lighting and no established fire lanes.
Because the site has been under appeal of the Orange County Board of Adjustment, a building permit could not be issued to make repairs until the zoning is resolved. The Inspections Division allowed the building to remain open as long as a number of conditions were met, including a fire protection service contract with the Mebane Fire Department.
The fire protection service contract expired on May 31 and the Inspections Division condemned the building on June 1.
