Thanks to a grant from the NC Department of Transportation, Chapel Hill and Carrboro will get an upgrade to their traffic system. The Town of Chapel Hill will contribute $450,000 to the $5 million project. NCDOT and Chapel Hill will begin designing the project this fall.
The upgrades will replace obsolete and aging equipment and add new features, including crosswalk displays and closed-circuit television equipment to monitor traffic flows.
The town plans to include fiber optic communication cable in the upgrade at an additional cost of $500,000, which may be a step towards providing universal broadband service for Chapel Hill.
Construction is set to begin in 2009, with completion projected for 2011.
