The Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board on Friday appointed Jacqueline Boyd Ellis as principal of Chapel Hill High School.
Most recently, Ellis served as director of middle school programs for Wake County Public Schools She was principal of Culbreth Middle School from July 2003-January 2007, where she was selected as the 2005-06 Chapel Hill-Carrboro Principal of the Year. She was also assistant principal at Riverside High School in Durham and a principal fellow intern at East Chapel Hill High School. Prior to her administrative work, she was a mathematics and language arts teacher in the Pitt County and Guilford County schools.
Ellis replaces Karla Eanes, who has taken a job in the Instructional Services Division in the district’s administrative offices, and will be the 33rd principal of Chapel Hill High, which opened in 1896. (The school was not integrated until 1966, when Lincoln High School closed.)
Ellis holds a master’s degree in school administration from UNC and a bachelor’s degree in middle grades education from East Carolina University.
“I am delighted that we were able to get Jackie Ellis back to our district,†said Superintendent Neil Pedersen. “She was an outstanding principal at Culbreth Middle School, which was excellent preparation for leading Chapel Hill High School. She has the organizational and people skills required to be a successful high school principal.â€
