Posted on July 12, 2007 by Staff

Gary Hunter Williams, 46, of Chapel Hill, born July 28, 1960, fought tremendously throughout his battle with colon cancer for 23 months. Gary lost his battle and was called home on July 7, 2007 at Durham Regional Hospital.

Gary was a 1978 graduate of Chapel Hill School and went on to graduate from Vance Granville Community College Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy. He joined the Orange County Sheriff’s Department in December 1994. In addition, Gary and his family owned and operated Bodyworks Fitness and Aerobics and Dollar Hut in Hillsborough for a number of years.

Gary met the love of his life the summer following his high school graduation and shared an amazing life with her. Gary was an outstanding husband and father. He immensely enjoyed watching his daughters dance and cheer and coaching his son’s football and baseball teams.

Gary is survived by his wife of 23 and a half years, Paula Cook Williams; daughters Megan Hunter and Melyssa Tate Williams, and son Jeffrey Fletcher Williams, all of the home; mother, Freda Williams and sister Patricia Cecil (John) of Chapel Hill; brother John Colon Williams (Jo) of Virginia, and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Fletcher Williams, Jr.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Walker’s Funeral Home of Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held at Amity United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at 11:00 am. Visitation with family was held one hour prior to service at the church.

At Gary’s request, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to a Memorial College Fund for his children at State Employees Credit Union
