Rogers Road Back-to-School Bash
The Faith Tabernacle Oasis of Love Church will be holding its annual Back to School Bash on Saturday, August 11 to provide children with supplies as they return to school for a new year. Your donations are encouraged.

Rev. Robert Campbell  writes on OrangePolitics.org that items that are particularly appreciated include  gift cards from local stores, book bags, backpacks, notebooks, paper, pencils or “any gifts that will make this day a day of support for families with school age children.”

Donations can be dropped off at the church at 8005 Rogers Road.

Students in Ghana
Fifteen students in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School’s Blue Ribbon Mentor Advocate Youth Leadership Initiative depart today (Thursday) for a two-week study abroad program in Ghana.

The Ghana study marks the initiative’s first international service trip. Focusing on three themes, students will learn about traditional African culture, Ghanaian history and political issues and the natural beauty and way of life in Ghana.

Students will have the opportunity to learn about batiking; visit national parks, rainforests and fishing villages; and meet the minister of parliament.

In addition, students will build desks for a rural village school and complete a beautification project at the campus of the Winneba Secondary School in the nation’s capital, Accra. The group will also learn about the country’s HIV and AIDS epidemic and volunteer at an HIV/AIDS clinic in Accra.

Only two of the students have ever traveled abroad before. The trip has been funded by contributions from more than 220 donors in the community.

During the week of August 6, WCHL-News Talk 1360 will air audio diaries recorded by the students on their trip.
