Obituary – George M. Norwood Jr.

George M. Norwood Jr., 86, of Carolina Meadows, Chapel Hill, died peacefully at home on Friday, Aug. 31, 2007.

A former hospital and university administrator, he was born in Goldsboro on July 15, 1921, to the late George and Helen Norwood. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Zabelle Corwin Norwood. In 1978 he married Bernice “Bunny” Carter Harris of Asheville.

He graduated from UNC in 1942, and served in the U.S. Army 1945-46.

He was business manager for health affairs at UNC until 1965, when he moved to Philadelphia to serve as vice president and then interim president of Thomas Jefferson University. After retirement, he returned to Chapel Hill. He’s an honorary alumnus of Jefferson Medical College; earned the Alumni Achievement Award from Thomas Jefferson University; Who’s Who in America 1978-79. He loved sharing stories of his amazing life, eastern N.C. barbecue and his sprawling combined family.

Mr. Norwood is survived by four children: Allen Norwood and wife Linda of Charlotte; Martha Shope and husband David of Charlotte; Geoffrey Norwood and wife Cris of Waynesville; Anthony Norwood and wife Patricia of Alexandria, Va. Stepchildren: Russ Harris and wife Linda Kinsinger of Chapel Hill; Chuck Harris and wife Gibbie of Raleigh; Felice Stonestrom and husband David of Palo Alto, Calif.; Mike Harris and wife Kim of Pella, Iowa. Sister: Jean Norwood Anderson of Raleigh.

Sisters-in-law: Mary Ruth Beeson of Brevard N.C.; Faith Norwood of Orlando, Fla.; Madge Norwood of Washington, N.C.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and beloved nieces and nephews.

Graveside services for the family will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery; a celebration of life for all family and friends will follow at 3 p.m. at the Carolina Meadows auditorium.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to UNC Hospice-Pittsboro, P.O. Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312; or to Remembrance and Gift Committee, Carolina Meadows, 100 Carolina Meadows, Chapel Hill, NC 27517.

Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas.
