You don’t get a lot of feel-good stories from a drought, but here’s one: A friend of ours keeps a good many ducks, geese and chickens and, as you might expect, collects a good many eggs.
Most of the year, the ducks and geese spend time on a lovely pond near her house doing what such creatures do (cue “The Blue Danubeâ€).
Lately though, there’s been no frolicking, as the pond has dried up. The other night our friend returned home from work in Chapel Hill to find that a neighbor had come to her rescue by running an irrigation line over to her place and refilling the pond.
Since her feathered friends had gotten out of the habit, she had to lead them back down to the water. Once prompted, she said, they took to it like you know what and were still out there cruising around long after bedtime.

Even though it’s tempting, please refrain from begging for a tropical system to send some rain our way.
This time of year, you usually don’t have to ask for one. A check of the Atlantic this week shows more and more evidence that we’re likely to have some kind of tropical visitor drop in sooner than we’d like.
