Nightclub shooting wounds six

Posted on October 4, 2007October 5, 2007 by Staff

UPDATE: The owners of Visions Night Club on Thursday closed the club permanently.

Six people were treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds after a shooting at Visions Night Club at 136 E. Rosemary St. in Chapel Hill around 1 a.m. Monday.

According to the Chapel Hill Police Department, the suspect is an unidentified black male who remains at large. He reportedly fired multiple shots from a handgun and was able to exit the club with the rest of the crowd.

Those wounded in the shooting include: Rowland Garret, 21, of Durham; Maurio Mitchell, 25, of Durham; Roy Parker, 21, of Raleigh; Marcus Dorty, 27, of Durham; Kenneth Lunsford, 20, of Durham; and a 16-year-old whose name was not released.

The club will be closed this weekend but will reopen for business next week, according to Kevin Gunter, public information officer with the Chapel Hill Police.

According to police, some of those wounded have known gang affiliations. Two of the wounded were Visions security employees.

The club that was previously located at 136 E. Rosemary Street lost its liquor license last fall after shootings outside the club. In addition, Avalon – a club that was located on West Rosemary Street – was closed after a man was shot and killed outside the club last year.

Gunter said investigators are working with Durham officials to run down gang-related leads, Gunter said.

“The gangs from Durham were involved in this,” he said.

Club patrons had shown up for “Rio’s Libra Birthday Bash,” and Visions allowed anyone over 18 with a college ID or anyone over 21 to enter.

Police have asked that anyone who has information about the shooting call either the Chapel Hill Police Department at 968-2760 or Crime Stoppers at 942-7515. Calls to Crime Stoppers are confidential and anonymous, and Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward up to $1,200 for information that leads to an arrest.

When will the city learn? This location should never be allowed to be a club ever again.
