Supporting Broun
We encourage the re-election of Alderman Joal Broun to the Carrboro Board of Aldermen. Joal is a long-time resident of Carrboro and she has worked in Carrboro as a public defender. Joal has volunteered and served the community as a former member of the OWASA Board and the Orange County Dispute Settlement Center.
Joal posseses a keen awareness of both the long-term and short-term needs of the community for balanced and sustainable development. She has pushed tirelessly to double the amount of commercial space in Carrboro as a whole, not just downtown, in order to alleviate the burden on residential taxpayers. She has worked to develop infrastructure improvements, such as sidewalks and the purchase of the future public works facility. Joal pushed for the purchase of the Adams Tract, Martin Luther King Jr. Park and for the lease of the land to build the new fire station.
Joal is a caring, committed and community-oriented individual. She enthusiastically listens to all sides of a debate and uses all available information to make a decision for the long-term welfare and health of Carrboro. Please help keep Alderman Joal Broun on the board, we all win.

Supporting Lavelle
Carrboro is fortunate to have Lydia Lavelle running for a seat on the Carrboro Board of Aldermen this fall. Lydia is an outstanding candidate and human being. I have known her for 23 years and her character, qualifications and dedication are all beyond reproach.
Lydia has extensive municipal and volunteer experience. She has a long-standing commitment to open space, trails and greenways. The board will benefit from her leadership on these issues.
She demonstrated her collaborative approach to leadership with her positive, assertive response to the recent controversial annexation of 300 households north of Homestead Road by serving as the chair of the New Horizons Task Force. This group served as communication conduit and liaison to guide the transition. In addition, she used her service on that group to spearhead the creation of guidelines and protocol to guide future annexations in a way that will be less contentious for the town and more respectful of the soon-to-be annexed.
Lydia currently serves on the town’s Planning Board, which has given her an understanding of the complicated design review process and working knowledge of the Land Use Ordinance. This service has allowed her to develop relationships with town staff and elected officials. She is eager to use knowledge and these relationships to benefit the town as an alderman.
Lydia is the rare individual who has the skills to lead, the passion for service and the personality to get things done. I encourage you to join me in casting your vote for Lydia Lavelle.

Supporting Coleman
Carrboro is fortunate to have an engaged citizenry led by creative and committed community leaders. Among our very best and brightest is Dan Coleman, who offers a rare combination of abilities, foresight and sense of community for our town.
Since we moved here 18 years ago, I have admired Dan’s work to help us grow smartly in ways that enhance our people, local businesses and ecology; to protect our greenways and natural areas; to keep our town affordable for all; and, most importantly, to help empower citizens to work together to create solutions for a better future.
I am grateful that as an alderman Dan has provided invaluable leadership on issues that matter to all of us. Dan has made Carrboro more inclusive, diverse and fair in terms of housing affordability, taxation, job opportunities and access to our greenways. His oversight over the Carolina North project will make a difference for future generations here.
Please vote on Nov. 6, and mark your ballot for Dan Coleman.

Supporting Cook  Â
As a resident of Carrboro, please join me in electing Sharon Cook for the Carrboro Board of Aldermen. As the mother of three, Sharon knows that the decisions made by our town boards ultimately affect our schools. Overcrowding, strained resources and frequent redistricting have resulted from the out-of-balance growth in our community. She also realizes that the taxes in our community must be controlled to prevent them from further spiraling upwards.
Sharon was a staunch proponent of the construction of a traffic light and sidewalks along Homestead Road and High School Road. This project was needed so that CHHS students and their families could walk and drive more safely to the school. She worked relentlessly for years with town, county and state officials to make this project happen. Finally, this fall 2007, the project was realized.
Sharon has also been a strong and outspoken advocate for the residents of Rogers Road in their battle to prevent another garbage facility from being built next to their neighborhood. She will fight [against] such an injustice whether it personally affects her or not. Sharon is a community activist in the best sense of the word and will continue to work to keep our community and its environment healthy and strong.
Again, Carrboro needs a community proponent such as Sharon Cook who seeks this office not for political power but rather for the common-sense values and betterment of her community.
