For the Record: 10/11/07

Mark your calendars

This newspaper has been running notices of late for a meeting on November 5 at the Carrboro High School Commons. The subject of the meeting should be of particular interest to anyone who regularly travels Smith Level Road, because from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. the state Department of Transportation will have on display plans for the long-awaited widening of Smith Level Road.

The meeting is billed as an “informal workshop,” and there will be town officials and DOT engineers and project managers on hand to walk you through the designs and take written comments on the plan.

This is no small project; it affects routes to three schools — Carrboro High, Frank Porter Graham Elementary and Culbreth — and will change traffic patterns on the heavily traveled BPW Club Road in addition to easing congestion on the morning commute into town from the south.

Perhaps most importantly, the compromise worked out between DOT and the town clears the way for a bike and pedestrian pathway along a road that has been far too dangerous for far too long.

And to pique your curiosity, the plan also creates a southern gateway into Carrboro with a proposed roundabout at Rock Haven Road.

The November 5 workshop is your best way to get ahead of the curve on a key transportation improvement and to convey your thoughts, concerns, astonishment, outrage and ideas.

A brief note about the paper

With a full six months of publishing under our belts (as of this writing, we are at issue 30), we’re pleased to observe that we’ve reached a point where the 5,000 copies we print and distribute each week are just about gone by the time the next edition rolls around.

We now have more than 75 locations where our readers can find us.

Each week we try to run a nifty little ad that answers the question, “Where can I find my Citizen?” In case you haven’t seen it or are wondering where to find us, here’s that list:
