Candidate Endorsement Letters: Chapel Hill

Posted on October 17, 2007October 17, 2007 by Staff

Greene change
It is one thing to espouse change for Chapel Hill, and quite another to have the leadership and work ethic to effect real change. Sally Greene has been extraordinarily effective for Chapel Hill, working with her fellow citizens and town council members to bring us such improvements as a 92-acre permanent conservation easement along Morgan Creek, changes to zoning rules to promote affordable housing, the creation of four new neighborhood conservation districts and a 10-year plan to end chronic homelessness.

Please join me in supporting Sally Greene for re-election to Chapel Hill Town Council.

Supporting Greene
As a member of the Chapel Hill Town Council, Sally Greene has proven to be an extraordinarily effective advocate for the preservation of our neighborhoods, our environment and our open space. Her keen intellect enables her to formulate public policy to realize the town’s long-term goals, and thus enhances our quality of life in Chapel Hill.

Sally is also an active participant in making this community a positive and enriching place to live through her leadership on issues ranging from civic justice to homelessness. Please join me in re-electing Sally to the Town Council.

Re-elect Hill
I am writing to urge people to vote for Cam Hill for Chapel Hill Town Council. Cam is one of the few of us who has lived in Chapel Hill his whole life. He has a unique appreciation of what it is that makes Chapel Hill special.

For over two years, I have had the opportunity to work closely with Cam on a project to benefit local athletes and I have been impressed with his dedication and creativity. He is someone who has earned respect from other governing bodies in the county and has proven his ability to work with various groups.

Cam has been representing the town in its discussions with the university concerning the plans for Chapel Hill North. He has the fortitude to ask the tough questions and to ensure that the massive development proposed is something that benefits both the town and the university.

Cam’s efforts to improve Franklin Street have begun to bear fruit. He has been at the forefront of creating residential opportunities downtown, the sidewalks are cleaner, parking issues are being dealt with and he is dedicated to improving the situation of the homeless folks.

Cam has worked tirelessly for the town in his first term in office. Vote for Cam Hill to keep Chapel Hill a vibrant and responsive community.

Supporting Hill
Cam Hill has been a terrifically effective member of the [Chapel Hill] Town Council and highly deserves to be re-elected. He has brought a listening and caring leadership to the board that is fair to all parties. His service to our community ensures that we will grow in a responsible way that will maintain the charm of our Chapel Hill. We need his balanced approach as we deal with all the upcoming difficult issues of growth and change.

It’s rare to find an elected official as genuine, modest and considerate as Cam. Vote for him this fall and keep him working for us.

Hill for balance
I urge you to support Cam Hill for Chapel Hill town Council. Development in Chapel Hill is accelerating and is making much of my hometown indistinguishable from any other town.

Finding the balance between inevitable growth and preserving the special character of our town is our biggest challenge. Over the last four years Cam has shown that he is a hardworking, well-informed and sensible leader. Please vote for Cam Hill.

Strom is strong
I am supporting Bill Strom for re-election because he has provided strong leadership for Chapel Hill. As mayor pro-tem he has been a key force in guiding the town to make tremendous strides in neighborhood protection, downtown development, use of public transportation, supply of affordable housing and environmental regulations during his time in office.

Bill’s continued presence on the town council is crucial as the town confronts key growth issues. Vote for Bill Strom this fall.

Strom is a steward
When the Elkin Hills neighborhood learned a few years ago that UNC planned to build an industrial facility in the woods near our homes, Bill Strom listened to our concerns and helped us negotiate successfully with the university. When he served on the Horace Williams Citizens Committee, Bill advocated managing the development of Carolina North to minimize its impact on neighborhoods and the environment. In both those situations, I saw first hand how effectively Bill works for neighborhood protection and careful stewardship of Chapel Hill’s beautiful natural setting. With the challenges ahead, we need him on the [Chapel Hill] Town Council.

Re-elect Strom
Bill Strom has earned re-election to Town Council. The accomplishments of his tenure are numerous. There have been major strides forward on the environment, affordable housing, open space, economic development and shaping the future of downtown Chapel Hill. Bill has been a lead player in these initiatives.

Chapel Hill is a much better place to live than it was eight years ago when Bill first got elected.  He listens to and works closely with constituents to address their needs.  He is a visionary thinker who comes up with great new ways of doing things.  Vote to reelect Bill Strom next month.
