Candidate Endorsement Letters: School Board

Posted on October 17, 2007 by Staff

Elect Burroughs
The public school system in Chapel Hill and Carrboro is rightly regarded as one of the best in the state of North Carolina. Dedicated teachers and administrators are the central reason for the success of the system, but credit must also be given to those who serve on the school board, providing direction and oversight.

There are a number of good candidates, including incumbents, who are running for positions on the school board this fall. I am writing to endorse Mia Burroughs.

Mia is a passionate supporter of public education and has a comprehensive understanding of the needs of all students. She is open-minded and listens to the voices and opinions of others. Mia has worked as a volunteer in our elementary schools. She respects the difficulties teachers face in the classroom. As a professional grant writer, she has dealt with county and state governments. She understands how policies are made and resources are allocated.

In particular, Mia has a keen awareness of the problems adolescents face in their teenage years. Mia will be a strong and vibrant advocate for programs and policies that benefit all of the children and young adults in our public schools.

Mia Burrough’s background and experience as an educator, parent, school volunteer and advocate for young people combine to make her an ideal choice for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board. I strongly urge voters to cast a ballot for Mia Burroughs in the upcoming election.

Streater for schools
My family and I urge all our friends and neighbors to vote to retain Annetta Streater on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board. As a parent leader, past member of the Curriculum Advisory Council and Co-Chair of the Frank Porter Graham School Governance Committee, Ms. Streater brings to the school board both local school and district-wide experience, and will continue to be an advocate for our diverse student body, parents and school community.

Her belief that every child has value and gifts to be explored informs Ms. Streater’s role on the school board: to advocate for an active district recruitment plan to assure our children a qualified and richly diverse staff of teachers and administrators; to support expanded professional development; to advocate for increased accountability of administrators and teachers in closing the minority achievement gap and the effective monitoring of district programs and services for all our children; to advocate for improved safety practices in every school. Because Annetta Streater believes it takes a village to raise a child, she will work to strengthen the engagement of parents, students, community leaders and stakeholders in helping address the challenges facing our school district.
