October 11
Conor Templeton, Brendan Neville and Ben Babcock were very impressive at [the October 11] meet against Smith. With determination, they stayed with the lead pack of the Smith Cyclones all the way until the very end. Unfortunately, the Cyclones proved to be too much to handle; the final score was Mustangs 46, Cyclones 16.

With a competitive spirit, the Lady Mustangs ran themselves to victory. Katey Furey and Smith’s lead runner were neck-and-neck most of the race. In a full-fledged sprint, Katey gave it her all and placed 2nd, only a split second behind the Smith runner. Not far behind, Tristin VanOrd placed 3rd, Emily Williams placed 5th and Erin McGibbon placed 7th. But it was Rachel Weaver’s photo finish, where she out-sprinted a Smith runner, that sealed the win. The final score was McDougle 25, Cyclones 30. The girls won by 5!
October 15

The girls managed to get a perfect score of 15 at [the October 15] cross country meet against Gravelly Hill. Showing their determination to win, 12 Lady Mustangs came in before the first Gravelly Hill runner. Final score was Lady Mustangs 15, Gravelly Hill 50.
The boys also beat the Gravelly Hill Grizzlies yesterday. Brendan Neville and Conor Templeton came in 2nd and 3rd place. Mark Flournoy placed 5th, Ben Babcock placed 6th and Eric Godsey placed 8th, for a final score of Mustangs 24, Grizzlies 33.

Come cheer on the Mustangs at their final home meet tonight (Thursday)!

On Ocober 11, the Lady Mustangs of McDougle Middle School defeated Culbreth Middle School 6 matches to 3.

The entire team supported every player throughout the evening. At Number 1 singles, Emily Mirkin competed in a controversial match that truly showed she has the heart of a champion. At Number 2 singles, Rachel Parks came from behind winning six straight games to win 8-6. Katie O’Brien cruised to victory at Number 3 singles. Lila Scott came from behind to win a tight match, 9-7, at Number 4 singles. Playing our Number 5 singles spot was Imani Miller, who won 8-3. And finally in singles, Grace McLaughlin battled to win 8-4. In doubles, our Number 1 team of Kelsey O’Regan and Grace McLaughlin won 8-4.

Men’s Soccer

Following a sub-par performance in their last game, the Culbreth boys soccer team bounced back with a 9-0 win over the Gravelly Hill Grizzlies. Unhappy with the intensity level of his usual starters, Coach Dixon began the game with a line-up composed predominantly of second-string and 5th-quarter players. Alex Callaham opened the scoring for the Cougars with an assist from Forrest Li within the first three minutes of the game. Brian Fitzpatrick followed with two goals in a row, both strong left-footed finishes, both assisted by Trey Deimler. A Mike McPeak corner kick was nearly converted by Deimler, but Sam Brighton cleaned up the rebound off the Gravelly Hill save for Culbreth’s 4th goal. Jack Vozella scored on two powerful long shots, assisted by Jacob Junker and Sean Doughty. With the Cougars safely in the lead, goalkeeper Joe Gustainis got some time on the field, and scored on a header off a cross from Tom Teagle. Teagle also put in the cross that resulted in the final goal of the game, a beautiful first-time finish at the far post by Blake Robinett. Defensive men of the match were Vic Sullivan and goalkeeper Eric Hughes, who stopped a breakaway attempt on the Grizzlies’ best opportunity of the game.
