Candidate Endorsement Letters: School Board

Posted on October 25, 2007 by Staff

Elect Burroughs

I am supporting Mia Burroughs in her candidacy for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board. I have worked with her on school budget advocacy for the last three years and I think she would be a natural as a school board member. She is dedicated, level-headed and works well with a wide variety of people. She takes the time to do her homework and fully understand the issues she is working on.

One of the things I have always admired about Mia is the enormous energy she brings to school issues. [Schools are] a topic she is truly passionate about. School officials at Lincoln Center have gotten used to seeing her turn up regularly in various volunteer capacities. Her excellent documentation of the history of our school district is one of many examples.

In her campaign, Mia has been working hard to gather input from parents, teachers and other citizens about what they think is working and what is broken in our schools. She will be very open to input from a wide array of sources if she is elected. As a parent of young children, I think she’ll be especially sensitive to the concerns of parents. For all of these reasons, I hope you’ll join me in giving Mia one of your votes for school board representation on Election Day.

Elect Burroughs

Mia Burroughs for school board is an easy choice. Mia is energetic, smart and deeply committed to the children, parents and schools in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Beyond many years of in-school experience as well as a project documenting the history of the CHCCS system, she has a long history of work in the nonprofit sector focused on young people. She is a team player and a good listener. “Every Student Matters” is not an empty campaign slogan but, rather, Mia’s sincere promise that, if elected, she will work diligently for each and every student in our school system.

Elect Wallach

I am writing to endorse Gary Wallach for Chapel Hill Carrboro School Board.  Mr. Wallach has revealed he is concerned and dedicated to making some serious changes.  Having just emerged as a student of the Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools, I think Mr. Wallach presents a ‘breath of fresh air’ and I feel his concern of students is geniune and sincerely welcomed.  He knows this district – and he knows what is needed to make it one of the better districts – he knows students and we need to have people on the school board who are responsive and sincere when dealing with students, parents and faculty.

Elect Kelley

I am writing to support the re-election of Mike Kelley to the CHCCS board. Mike has been an effective and tireless advocate for our schools and he thus deserves our vote. I know Mike both personally and professionally. He is smart, articulate and responsive. I urge us all to support him on election day.

Gary Wallach will make an outstanding advocate for all of our children.

Some of his advocacy efforts on behalf of the general population have found their way into the news and onto the web, including his defense against teacher assistant cuts in 2005 and his challenge of the fairness of the latest redistricting plan. And of course, his service on the Frank Porter Graham School Governance Committee benefited a diverse constituency.

Most importantly, I strongly believe that his skill and wherewithal in the championing of accountability, openness, and transparency will be a tremendous asset for the entire student population.

Any institution as complex as the CHCCS encounters breakdowns. In fact, any department as complex as the Exceptional Children’s Department (Special Needs) encounters breakdowns. Over the past two years, I have accompanied Gary to a half-dozen meetings he initiated with Superintendent Neil Pederson. Following the spotlight Gary directed to issues of concern, steps toward improvement emerged, in the form of solutions that are transferable to issues of concern to the general population:

*How do we acknowledge breakdowns when it is not in the administrator’s interest?

*How can parents, who possess a unique and early view of problems, have an unfiltered advisory voice in these issues?

*How can we reduce the adversarial culture that too often rears its ugly head?

Concrete, demonstrable outcomes from those meetings included the formation of the Special Needs Advisory Council, an autism focus group attended by over 40 parents, and the hiring of an autism expert/consultant to review and recommend improvements.

As always, however, the long term outcome is only as good as the follow up, whether for the special needs community, or for the general population. In the four years I have worked with him, I have observed in Gary a rare level of persistence and determination to pursue the right thing for our children.

On November 6, please vote for Gary so he can apply that determination on behalf of your child.
