News Brief: Hillsborough passenger rail

Posted on October 25, 2007 by Staff

The Orange County Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday voted unanimously to pursue a passenger rail service stop in Hillsborough.

The Hillsborough Train Stop Citizen’s Group had requested that the board formally seek passenger rail service for Hillsborough. The group presented a petition with 366 signatures asking AMTRAK, the Special Transit Advisory Committee, the NC Department of Transportation, North Carolina Railroad, Orange County Government, Hillsborough Town Government, Triangle Transit Authority and other agencies to work together toward establishing a train stop in Hillsborough.

Commissioner Mike Nelson said he thought the train stop was “a great idea,” but he would like to ensure that the bus service from Chapel Hill-Carrboro to Hillsborough would connect directly with the train stop.

The board will research the establishment of this stop, including possible locations in Hillsborough.

Local Rail Service using existing tracks from Hillborough, NC to Chapel Hill/Carrboro, NC may not be a difficult to accomplish. Coordination Mass Transit ie.. Chapel Hill Transit to move passengers from these pickup points can not be that difficult.
