Culbreth Middle
Boys’ Soccer

The Culbreth boys soccer team avenged last year’s first round tournament loss with a 3-1 victory over Stanford yesterday. Sam Brighton converted a penalty kick after Trey Deimler was taken down in the box for an early 1-0 lead. Man of the match Victor Zhang scored two magnificent goals off first-time volleys, one set up by a Mike McPeak corner kick, the other from a cross by Jack Vozella. Defensive player of the game was goalkeeper Joe Gustainis, who continued to show that he is the best 1v1 keeper in the conference by stopping several breakaway attempts by the Chargers. With the win, the Cougars advance to the semifinal round.

Chapel Hill High
Field Hockey

The Chapel Hill Tigers field hockey team won the PAC VI conference title Saturday night at UNC’s Henry Stadium with a 1-0 victory over their archrival, East Chapel Hill High’s Wildcats.

From beginning to end, it was a game of extreme intensity for both teams, who had faced each other twice this season. The two teams went into the game tied for first place in the conference.

Each team won by one point when they played on their home turf during the regular season.
East held off several scoring attempts and the first half ended scoreless.
Senior Taylor Wahrenbrock scored on a penalty stroke in the second half.

The Tigers defense held off several late East attempts on penalty corners to win the game.
Chapel Hill was focused throughout the game, dominating both halves with 12 corners. The defense was led by senior Hannah Martin, juniors Kira Borman and Hunter Newton and senior goalkeeper Alyssa Stefanadis, who had four saves during the game.

East Chapel Hill had four shots on goal and five corners.

Chapel Hill’s Coach Diego Cabellero is in his first season as head field hockey coach. His assistant coaches are Marie Bounds and Xan Funk.

The Chapel Hill team takes the first-place conference title and will represent the East Region as they advance to the state finals next weekend at Wake Forest University. They will face the Asheville High Cougars in the state field hockey playoffs.

McDougle Middle
Cross Country

(via Danae Whitaker)
In the 2007 OPAC Cross Country Championship, both the boys and girls showed speed and determination against the six other teams participating. In the girls’ championship race, Tristin VanOrd placed fourth overall and received a medal. Also placing toward the front were Katey Furey in sixth and Emily Williams in 11th.

In the boys’ championship race, Mitch McLeod set a new course record. He ran the 1.85-mile course in 10 minutes and 5 seconds. He received both a medal and plaque for his first place finish.

In the open race, we had two girls place. Lexi Savelli came in second overall and Kathryn Penerya came in fourth. Both girls received ribbons. Overall, the team of Tristin VanOrd, Katey Furey, Emily Williams, Rachel Weaver, Erin McGibbon, Marleigh Cannon and Kathleen Cannon came in third place. The boys team of Mitch McLeod, Brendan Neville, Conor Templeton, Mark Flournoy, Ben Babcock, Grant Cabell and Eric Godsey also placed third. Third place out of seven teams is awesome!

Coach Whitaker and Coach Proto are extremely proud of all the runners. They did a great job this season, and yesterday just helped to prove how much the whole team has improved. Go, Mustangs!
