Stillhouse Bottom is an ecological singularity. The only undisturbed natural area of its kind in Orange County, it hosts a wide variety of plant and animal life along with centuries-old trees.
The North Carolina Botanical Garden is raising money to add 35 undeveloped acres of this special area to an already-preserved 17 acres.
The botanical garden will host a benefit concert at Stillhouse Bottom on Saturday, November 17, 2007 from 6-9 p.m. The Stillhouse Bottom Band, featuring fiddler A.C. Bushnell, will perform.
Please RSVP at 962-0522. A minimum $20 donation is suggested.
Stillhouse Bottom boasts an impressive biodiversity, or variety of flora and fauna.
Over 100 plant species have been identified, and residents include red-tailed and red-shouldered hawks, yellow-billed cuckoo, white-breasted nuthatch, ovenbird and scarlet tanager.
The healthy stream is home to an amphibian community made up of dusky salamanders, two-lined salamanders and green frogs.
And perhaps best of all, within Stillhouse Bottom lies the 5.5-acre Ivey Property that appears to have never been logged, and contains trees thought to be about 300 years old.
The Stillhouse Bottom Nature Preserve is owned by the Botanical Garden Foundation, Inc. and is a dedicated and permanently protected North Carolina Nature Preserve.
