County commissioners consider methane capture

Posted on December 6, 2007 by Staff

The Board of County Commissioners on Monday considered a possible gas recovery project at the Orange County Landfill as a way of reducing greenhouse gas.

Several private companies have recently approached the county hoping to develop a plan to trap landfill gas, primarily methane.

UNC is also interested in contracting with the county to recover the gas, but county and university officials have not yet been able to discuss the university’s proposal.

County staff had recommended that the board request proposals from both private firms and UNC, but university officials refused to bid against private firms.

UNC officials asked the county to postpone a decision so that university and county officials could discuss a potential plan.

“This is an extraordinarily important time we’ve entered where finally there’s a market for this kind of methane gas,” Commissioner Mike Nelson said. “I want to move ahead expeditiously. I’ve always wanted to do this hand-in-hand with the university because it makes the most sense with whatever may eventually happen at Carolina North.”

He added, “I’m not going to be willing to wait forever. We need to move ahead.” The board will discuss their options at a meeting on Tuesday.

In other county business, the board elected Commissioner Barry Jacobs as board chair and Commissioner Valerie Foushee as vice chair.

Jacobs was first elected to the board in 1998 and previously served as board chair in 2002, 2004 and 2006. He replaces Commissioner Moses Carey.

The board reappointed Donna Baker as clerk, Laura Blackmon as county manager and Geoff Gledhill as county attorney. — Susan Dickson
