Board of Education to review next year’s school calendar

Posted on December 20, 2007 by Staff

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education tonight (Thursday) will consider the recommended calendars for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years.

If the board approves the 2008-09 calendar, students will start school August 25, with teachers starting on August 15. Under the recommended calendar, the last day of school would be June 10, 2009, and high school graduation would be June 13.

This year, school started on August 27 and the last day of school will be June 10.

Under a 2004 state law, school must start no earlier than August 25 and end no later than June 10. Several school superintendents, including Superintendent Neil Pedersen, opposed the law, which was spearheaded by the tourism industry.

Overall, the 2008-09 calendar has the same number of holidays and teachers’ workdays as this school year’s calendar, with 14 teacher workdays and 11 holidays, plus 10 annual leave days around Christmas, Thanksgiving and spring break.
