Smith Middle School students scored highest of any school team in North Carolina in the American Mathematics Competition 8 for middle school students.
Students from Smith and Phillips middle schools participated in the competition. Smith students Arun Ganesh and Richard Lu earned perfect scores in the competition – the only two perfect scores in the state.
Smith students who earned a certificate of distinction by posting a score of 21 or better include: Michael Gao, Max DeJong, Andrew DeJong, Thomas Greet, Wesley Guo, Michael Lao, Stan Perumov, Esther Rolf and Tyler Tran.
Phillips students who earned certificates of distinction include Kevin Tie, Sheila Deng and Alice Huang.
Smith students who earned a certificate of honor by posting score of 17 or better include: Jamie Chen, Julie Cui, Mike Kalantar, Jinyoung Kang, Daphne Liu, Oskar Marszalek, Jacob Stern, Adam Wang, Charles Zhao, Cameron Imani, Matthieu Sieredzki, Marissa Minnick, Isaac Akers, Christina Annas, Michael Arneson, Karish Desai, Michelle Lee, Abby Muller, Priyanka Reddy, Katherine Stafford, Calvin Xiao, Jean Yi, Ellie Funkhouser, Sarah Linden, Conner Parkinson, Param Sidhu, Alex Werden, Carl Yin, Kevin On, Ranjitha Ananthan, Paul Lee and Elle Weeks.
Phillips students who earned a certificate of honor include: Li Zhang, Sam Towne, Connie Zong, Eunice Shim, Frank McBride, Daniel Liu and Matt Fordham.
The state’s top 20 students will be invited to participate in the AMC10 for high school students.
