Letter to the Editor: Town should act

Posted on February 27, 2008 by Staff

I was very dismayed to read about the bicycle accident suffered by musician Dave Laney. Particularly so, because I had just written to Mayor Chilton a few days ago about unregulated traffic in Carrboro.

Aside from putting up with the speeders and the tailgaters, I have discovered that cars are not stopping as I attempt to go to and from the Century Center, within the crosswalk, at night. This was my second letter in a year, and I have received no reply. Interestingly, a recent letter to parks and recreation about children in the dog park, received immediate attention and response. Not only are human lives at stake here, but surely the town recognizes the potential liability of not enforcing the laws and regulations that it creates.

It’s been my experience that bikers in town commit just as many traffic violations as drivers in cars. When is the last time you saw a car come up to a red light, wait until traffic clears and then go through it? It happens all the time with bikers.

The best thing to do is to kick or hit their car as they go buy. They get a nice dent, and they can either bitch at you about it, in which you case you press charges for them getting close enough for you to hit their car, or they learn an expensive lesson. Works for me.
