Congratulations to the owners of the Andrews-Riggsbee site, soon to be Roberson Square, on approval of their project. I can’t wait to see their cool-looking mixed-use building in place of the vacant lot that is there now!
I’m disappointed they didn’t include a restaurant, any child-related structures, and that their garbage entrance will face their residential neighbors on the East Carr Street instead of the commercial Roberson Street side.
What has me and my neighbors worried is the thought of having to live through the construction of this project. In my opinion, the owners of this property didn’t endear themselves to us neighbors during the demolition of the former hardware store building. Somehow, the demolition took place only on the weekends for around three months last summer. Talk about rude awakenings, from back up alarms, to I beams hitting concrete, it was a sleep-deprived summer! I know construction is loud and dirty, hopefully this time the owners will show us neighbors some love by working to respect our right to live in peace and quiet, especially on the weekends. When I made a point of this at the aldermen’s meeting, the mayor said the town couldn’t limit work hours, only prohibiting starting work before noon on Sunday. Wow, one would think that since the town basically gave a gift of seven parking places on East Carr Street at $10,000 a pop, the mayor’s figures not mine, that the town could leverage some concessions on work hours! Oh well, I understand and respect the idea of building mixed-use in town, I’d rather see Carrboro grow upwards instead of outwards. That said, Good Luck and Godspeed on your project, and oh yeah, Welcome to Carrboro!
Your loving neighbor,
Buddy Kelly
