Letter: For the tax

Posted on April 17, 2008 by Staff

We are not exceptionally knowledgeable about politics or taxes. We do listen to the news every day, frequently read the local newspapers and vote every opportunity we get the chance. We understand the basic idea of the proposed land transfer tax referendum (referred to mistakenly by opponents of the measure as a “home tax”) for which Orange County voters will soon cast their votes.

We are absolutely sure of one thing, though. If Ellie Kinnaird supports the idea of adding a very small, one-time tax to commercial and noncommercial real estate sales which will help the county finance and improve public education, then it must be a good idea. Why else would she support it? Why would she want to do anything that might hurt any of her constituents, especially those with limited and low incomes? Ellie Kinnaird has more integrity in her little finger than most politicians will ever have. We trust Sen. Kinnaird, so we will vote for the referendum.
