Letter from the Editor: Drought not over

Posted on April 17, 2008 by Staff

There’s an interesting twist to the jump from Stage III water conservation all the way back to Stage I. Under Stage II and Stage III, the dozens of local swimming pools, most notably those at the university and the public pools, could not be refilled. So one reason for the OWASA decision last week to jump to Stage I rules was to allow those pools to be filled for the upcoming season.

We say all this because some people have taken the jump to Stage I to mean it’s a water free-for-all again. This week, the town boards in both Chapel Hill and Carrboro told OWASA they want to see strong conservation rules continue.

With water supplies still at a historic low, the boards and OWASA agree that a quick return to Stage II or Stage III is possible. Those pools, once filled, can be topped off under Stage II.
