Letter from the Editor: Use it or lose it

Posted on April 17, 2008 by Staff

No doubt, sometime prior to Election Day in 2000, a few hundred Floridians uttered the oft-heard phrase “my vote doesn’t count.”

Seven and a half years later, as we watch the consequences of that shirking of civic duty, a large portion of the country would still like to throttle them.

The answer to many questions along the lines of “When is all this going to change?” or “When are we going to hold politicians accountable?” is “The first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.”

In heavily Democratic Orange County, the first Tuesday in May is important as well since it’s a pretty good indicator of who might serve on our county commission. In years with open statewide offices — like this year — the May primaries are also an important hurdle for the next governor, senator or member of the Council of State.

Thanks to a push to make participation more possible, the voting period extends well beyond the traditional Tuesday exercise.

In fact, it starts today (Thursday) with the opening of early-voting stations in Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough.

We note as well that voter registration has soared in recent weeks and, with the new same-day registration option, will continue to do so. The presidential race is driving much of it, and up and down the ballot there are plenty of reasons to make your mark in this election.

As of Friday, let us commence to vote in droves.
