Endorsement Letters: Leo Allison

Posted on April 24, 2008 by Staff

Support Leo Allison

The Orange County commissioners race this year includes seats for several districts. One of the reasons we changed to district representatives was to ensure that all parts of the county were represented by their own community representatives. I am thrilled and honored to support Leo Allison for county commissioner in District 2.

I met Leo Allison when we worked together on the Orange County Planning Board. Leo Allison is the quiet-spoken person to whom everyone listens, the one who is always there first and always prepared, who stays to the end and helps clean up. I was truly impressed with his knowledge of planning and development, schools and local issues, and his ability to get to the heart of an issue and tirelessly build a consensus for action. When I learned more about who he was, it seemed to me that Leo Allison was one of those rare folks who are sometimes described as “born to public service.”

Leo was born and raised in Efland to a hardworking farm family. He met and married his wife while both served as schoolteachers; they have been married for 53 years. After teaching, Leo worked for 34 years at IBM as a quality control manger, with responsibility for a $15 million dollar budget and a large staff. After he retired, he spent the last 15 years giving of his time and talents to Orange County through public service, serving on 11 different public and private boards, a service that he continues today. He currently serves as a member of the Orange County ABC Board, Orange-Alamance Water Systems Board, Friends of the Central Orange Senior Center Board, the Sportsplex Task Force and Legal Aid of North Carolina Clients Council Board.

Leo Allison is a man whose character and conduct demonstrate proven leadership, dedication to public service and community and thoughtful decision-making. Leo has pledged to encourage business and manufacturing in the economic district to increase the business tax base and lessen individual property owners’ tax burdens; to attract more jobs for Orange County; to improve the quality of our schools, increase graduation rates, make sure that all schools receive the same funding; to protect and promote sustainable farming; and to expand recreational facilities and programs for all age groups in Orange County. I trust Leo Allison to continue to serve us as he always has done in a fair and balanced way with honor and vision. I hope members of District 2 will join those of us who support this humble public servant and vote for Leo Allison for District 2 Orange County commissioner on May 6.
