Obituary – Chrystine H. Culbreth

Mrs. Chrystine H. Culbreth passed away Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Carol Woods Retirement Community where she lived for many years.

Mrs. Culbreth was born in Kinston, NC. She graduated from Louisburg Junior College in Louisburg NC, and Scarritt College in Nashville, TN, where she earned her BA degree. Although she had been accepted into the graduate school she elected to work in Raleigh to be closer to Chapel Hill.

She was a charter member and former president of the Oakview Garden Club, which presented her with a North Carolina Life Membership. She was a National Accredited Flower Show Judge, and a member of the Chapel Hill Garden Club, Chapel Hill Preservation Society and National Flower Show Judges. She was a volunteer at UNC Hospitals. She has been a faithful member of the University United Methodist Church since 1937 and served in many capacities there.

Mrs. Culbreth married Grey Culbreth in 1937 and has lived in Chapel Hill since that time. She and Grey were active in many organizations in Chapel Hill and volunteered many years of service in the area. She was a University of North Carolina employee for nineteen years.

She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She will be missed by her family and many friends who will remember her by her faith, love of life, devotion to others, love of Carolina sports and especially her wonderful smile.

She is survived by daughter, Susan C. Blackburn, and her husband Glenn of Dataw Island, SC; son, Michael L. Culbreth and his wife Betty, of Winston-Salem, NC; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is also survived by Marie Horton of Kinston, NC; Muriel Horton of Rocky Mount, NC; Mr. and Mrs. William Culbreth of Stedman, NC; Mrs. Stanley Culbreth, Mr. and Mrs. William Morrison, and Mrs. Tom Newby of Greensboro, NC; Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Blackburn and Mr. and Mrs. Brad Deicas of Richmond, VA; nieces and nephews, Ray Roberts of Pooler, GA and Dono Hulsker of Hilversum, The Netherlands. Mrs. Culbreth was preceded in death by her husband, Grey Culbreth, and daughter Patricia C. Deane.

The memorial service and reception to celebrate her life was held Monday, April 21, 2008 at the Carol Woods Assembly Hall.
