Hearing set for taco truck rules

At its meeting Tuesday night at Town Hall, the Carrboro Board of Aldermen set a public hearing for June 24 on a proposed amendment to the town’s land-use plan as a result of the controversy raised earlier this year over taco trucks downtown.

After an anonymous complaint in January, the town sent landowners warnings that the trucks using their properties violate zoning rules. But citing concerns about the rules as drafted, town officials decided not to follow up with the next steps in zoning violation cases.

The board of aldermen, many of whom said they support having the vendors, asked for a review of the zoning rules for the trucks. The current rules were drafted in the early 1980s in response to the creation of the Carrboro Farmers’ Market.

The new rules would create an official definition for “mobile food vendors” and define the permitted size, signage, hours and use of the operations. Vendors also would be required to get a zoning permit.

In other action Tuesday, the board agreed to a traffic-calming plan for Simpson Street that includes the installation of two speed tables at a cost of between $4,500 and $5,000.

The board also appointed Tom Mullen and Lynn Weller to the Environmental Advisory Board; reappointed Linda Bowerman to be Carrboro’s representative on the Orange County Solid Waste Advisory Board; reappointed Chuck Morton, Wendy Wenk and Tom Wiltberger to the Appearance Commission/Neighborhood Preservation District Commission; and established the membership of the town’s new Local Living Economy Task Force. The members of the task force are Robert Dickson, Victor Jimenez, Gary Kramling, Margot Lester, Peter Lee, Jennifer McMillan, Sammy Slade and Chuck Willingham. Aldermen Dan Coleman and Randee Haven O’Donnell will represent the board of aldermen on the task force.
