Healthy Kids Campaign plans Saturday celebration

Posted on June 5, 2008 by Staff

Fresh on the heels of winning kudos Tuesday night from the Town of Carrboro for community gardening, the Orange County Partnership for Young Children plans a celebration of its Healthy Kids Campaign Saturday from 3-5 p.m. at Carrboro Elementary School. The campaign has set up two gardens in Carrboro — one at the school and another at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park — and is looking for a third, possibly in conjunction with a local church.

After a presentation of the efforts before the Carrboro Board of Aldermen Tuesday night at Town Hall, the board, which last year approved use of part of the park for the garden, passed a resolution applauding the work of the program.

Board member Randee Haven O’Donnell said she’s been delighted to see the number of families working together at the gardens each weekend. She suggested that a garden be planned for the new Morris Grove Elementary School as well.

Saturday’s event will feature presentations about each of the partnership’s new programs, a kids cooking demonstration and a tour of the school’s garden.

The campaign’s three new programs, funded by grants and contributions, focus on preventing child obesity by increasing opportunities for children to eat smart and move more. They include a effort to aid pre-schools in creating physical activity programs and increasing knowledge and consumption of healthy foods; the community garden program and the Move It! Project, which will help create and fund scholarships for low-income children to attend local physical activity programs and camps.
