With little fanfare and virtually no discussion, the Carrboro Board of Aldermen unanimously passed the town’s fiscal 2008-09 budget Tuesday night.

The final vote came after Town Manager Steve Stewart modified his original proposal to include an additional $4,000 for the Orange County Land Trust. Stewart had trimmed the Land Trust’s request in a fashion similar to other jurisdictions, but was asked by the board of aldermen to fully fund the group’s request after a public hearing last week. Land Trust advocates had argued that it needs the additional funds to help sell a growing inventory of properties.

The change added .03 cents to proposed tax increase of 3.26 cents. The final version approved Tuesday night by the board raises the town’s tax rate to 68.63 cents per $100 valuation. For the owner of a $200,000 home the increase would be about $65.

The $18,480,375 budget reflects concern of a slow growth in the town’s tax base and flagging sales tax revenues. It calls for only three major capital projects — $260,000 for part of the Weaver Street reconstruction project, $13,230 for tennis court resurfacing at Wilson Park and $10,500 for dog park fence renovations at Anderson Park.
